How to see the filming locations
Most locations in Salzburg are close together, while Mondsee, Lake Wolfgang and Werfen are 30 to 45 minutes away by car. The easiest way to combine them is a guided tour in a small vehicle. Bob’s Special Tours has been taking guests to the filming locations of The Sound of Music movie since 1976 – in small groups or privately, with the stories behind the scenes and the real history of the von Trapp family.
The museum about The Sound of Music movie
Since September 2026 the film has its own museum in Salzburg: Sound of Music Salzburg (the museum about The Sound of Music movie), a branch of the Salzburg Museum on the grounds of Hellbrunn, a few steps from the gazebo. Around 450 objects – costumes, props, posters, recordings and photos – tell the story of the real von Trapp family, the Broadway musical and the 1965 film. It is open daily from late March to 1 November; the Salzburg Card includes one free entry. More on the Hellbrunn page.
Film and reality
Not everything in the film was filmed where it seems: interiors were built in Hollywood, two different buildings form the von Trapp villa, and the real wedding took place in a different church. On each location page we explain what you will see today and what is film magic.
