The gazebo in Hellbrunn Park

The white glass gazebo is probably the most photographed filming location in Salzburg. It stands today in the park of Hellbrunn Palace, a short drive south of the Old Town.

In the film

Liesl and Rolf sing “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” in and around the gazebo, and later Maria and the Captain sing “Something Good”. The dance scenes inside were filmed on a larger copy in the Hollywood studio – the real gazebo is much smaller than it looks in the film.

The real history

The gazebo was built for the film and originally stood in the grounds of Leopoldskron Palace. It was later moved to the park of Hellbrunn Palace, where it is easier for visitors to reach. Hellbrunn itself was built from 1613 as a summer palace for Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus. Its park covers around 60 hectares and holds much more than the gazebo: the famous trick fountains, which still surprise visitors with hidden water jets today, the Prince-Archbishop’s palace museum, and the Stone Theatre, a former quarry in the woods on Hellbrunn Hill that was turned into an open-air stage.

The museum about The Sound of Music movie in Hellbrunn

Since September 2026 Salzburg has its own museum about the film: Sound of Music Salzburg (the museum about The Sound of Music movie), a branch of the Salzburg Museum in three restored historic buildings on the grounds of Hellbrunn (Fürstenweg 33–35), a short walk from the gazebo. Around 450 objects – costumes, props, posters, recordings and photos – tell the story of the real von Trapp family, the Broadway musical and the 1965 film. Highlights include a 360° projection around a replica of the gazebo and a Do-Re-Mi sing-along. The museum is open daily from late March to 1 November. Admission: adults €8, seniors (65+) €4.80, children and young people €4.80, children under 6 free, families €16. The Salzburg Card includes one free entry.

The trick fountains are not part of these tours. Our private 6-hour e-bike tour includes the trick fountains: tickets for the trick fountains and palace museum and for the museum about The Sound of Music movie can be added when you book, or you visit both free of charge with the Salzburg Card, which you can also book with us. The e-bike tour can also be booked without the focus on The Sound of Music movie, with the trick fountains only.
