Mirabell Gardens – the Do-Re-Mi filming location

Mirabell Gardens are the setting for the joyful finale of “Do-Re-Mi” in The Sound of Music movie – and one of the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Austria. Entry to the gardens is free and they are open every day.

In the film

In the last part of the “Do-Re-Mi” sequence, Maria and the seven children dance around the Pegasus Fountain, run through the arched hedge tunnel, pass the dwarf garden and end the song in front of the large wrought-iron gate at the Rose Hill, with the Fortress Hohensalzburg in the background. Many guests are surprised how small and close together these spots are in reality – the film editing makes the garden look much larger.

The real history

Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for Salome Alt, the mother of his many children. Its gardens were redesigned in the Baroque style around 1690 and are full of mythological statues. Today the palace houses the offices of the mayor and the civil registry office of Salzburg: the Baroque Marble Hall is where many couples come to get married. In the evenings, the Marble Hall is the venue of the Mirabell Palace Concerts.
